For everyone that attended the Sunshine Invitational it was a great event. We also hosted our club race on Sunday Feb 10th and the kids had great day and everyone had a chance to participate, even some of the parents!

Attention U-12 and U 10 Families,

Please note, the camp previously schedule for Nov 16 – 18 is being changed to Saturday and Sunday only. There will be no training on Friday Nov. 16 due to many athletes being unavailable. There is no cost for children registered in the U-12 Super Plus, U 10 Super Plus or Plus U-12.

Who is this camp for?
The pre-season camp is for athletes registered in the U-12 and U 10 (Super Plus) programs. It is optional for athletes in the U-12 Plus program (ages 8 – 11). This camp is not intended for children in the Basic program.

Why are we offering pre-season training for these groups? There are often adjustments that need to be made to equipment during the early season (e.g. boot fitting, boot softening, outgrown poles). An extra couple of days on snow prior to the official training season will allow coaches the opportunity to work through sequipment issues and start team building exercises with the athletes. We have such a long season at Sunshine, it is our hope that familes of U-12 athletes do not feel any pressure to send athletes to off-season camps. We would like to optimize training at our home hill, and take advantage of early season conditions when possible.

Free trial days: The club will offer free trial days on occasion throughout the season. Nov. 17 & 18 will be two of such days when children who are not currently registered with the program can try it out for free. If you have friends or family who would like to participate in a free trial day, please have them contact me via contact form.

Pre-season assessment days: On Nov. 17 & 18, any children new to the club can take a few runs with Martha or one of the coaches to help match them with an appropriate group once the program begins. If you cannot make one of the free, pre-season assessment days, I will give you a call, and we can have a chat about your child’s experience and skill level over the phone. If you would like to book a time for a pre-season assessment, please send me an email by Nov. 11.

It looked like any other weekend morning at Sandy Beach Park in Calgary until a pack of Sunshine Speedster athletes arrived on the scene. After a dynamic warm up demonstration led by Coach Dave Anderson got everyone’s juices flowing, this peaceful little park came alive with leaps and bounds.

Based on the Husky Snow Stars and AIM 2 Win Long Term Athlete Development Model, a series of dryland test stations designed specifically for U-12 and U-10 alpine athletes had everyone hopping.

Standing long jumps, bungee jumps, sit ups and push ups are only a few of the physical capacities assessed over the course of the morning.

Technique and form were the emphasis of the day, and all Speedster athletes have a dryland training program to follow until the next dryland day in November.

U-12 and U-10 coaches:

The U-12 and U-10 program schedules (draft) have been posted, so please have a look. A more specific version will be provided to each family on the first day of the program. Plus, Basic and 5 and Under program schedules will be posted shortly.

Two pre-season dryland dates have been proposed for U-12 and U-10 athletes , as well as any athletes 8 – 10 years of age in the Bsic or Plus programs:

Sat. Oct 13 – 10:00 AM – noon, Sandy Beach
Sat. Nov 3 – 10:00 AM – noon, Sandy Beach

Bring: Appropriate outdoor active wear, water bottle, running shoes, current weight, notebook, pencil
Following the dryland session, the athletes will be provided with a maintenance program leading into the next dryland date. Though the focus will be proper technique, certain exercises will be tested in Oct. and Nov. so the athletes can assess their own progress.

Here are the directions to Sandy Beach:

From Crowchild trail head East on 50th avenue SW.

Follow 50th until you are in a parking lot at River Park. Drive through the parking lot and down the gravel road to Sandy Beach.

There is limited parking right at the bottom of the hill but there is more if you follow the road around to the left.

FYI – River Park is an off leash dog park if you have a four legged friend.

If you have questions about equipment, (e.g. checking skis and boot sizes), please bring along the gear in question and we can have a look.
